China has made remarkable progress in reducing poverty over the past decade, lifting over 800 million people out of extreme poverty according to World Bank data. In 2021, the Chinese government officially declared that it had eradicated absolute poverty nationwide, a goal achieved through aggressive economic reforms, rural development programs, and targeted subsidies.

However, despite these achievements, challenges remain. Relative poverty, income inequality, and regional disparities continue to affect large sections of the population, particularly in remote and underdeveloped western provinces like Tibet, Xinjiang, and parts of Yunnan.

Rising unemployment among youth, a slowing economy, and a shrinking real estate sector have also raised concerns about the sustainability of poverty reduction efforts. Experts warn that while China has succeeded in meeting its basic poverty alleviation goals, ensuring long-term equality and improving quality of life remains a complex and ongoing challenge.

The government has pledged continued support through education, skill development, and rural revitalization programs, signaling that the war on poverty in China has entered a new phase.
